Program Overview

  • At the National GEM Consortium, our mission is to attract a pool of African American, Hispanic American and American Indian talent to careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by promoting the attainment of advanced degrees. Each year, GEM identifies and recruits nearly 2,000 undergraduate students, graduate students and working professionals from these underrepresented groups for admission to advanced degree programs at the nation’s top universities. Through three graduate Fellowship tracks – Master of Science in Engineering, Ph.D. in Science and Ph.D. in Engineering - we provide them with much-needed financial support that is often the deciding factor in pursuing graduate education. In addition, all GEM Fellows work as paid summer interns while completing their graduate studies – a requirement that provides excellent career experience as well as opportunities for companies to assess and recruit talented employees. More than half of all GEM Alumni report accepting fulltime employment offers from Employer sponsors upon completion of their degree
